Focusing on basic lubrication problems this book offers specific engineering applications. The book introduces methods and programs for the most important lubrication problems and their solutions. It is divided into four parts. The first part is about the general solving methods of the Reynolds equation, including solutions of Reynolds equations with different conditions and their discrete forms, such as a steady-state incompressible slider, journal bearing, dynamic bearing, gas bearing and grease lubrication. The second part gives the ‘energy equation solution’. The third part introduces methods and programs for elasto-hydrodynamic lurbication, which links the Reynolds equation with the elastic deformation equation. The final part presents application lubrication programs used in engineering. Provides numerical solution methodologies including appropriate software for the hydrodynamic and elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication of bearings Offers a clear introduction and orientation to all major engineering lubrication problems and their solutions Presents numerical programs for specific applications in engineering, with special topics including grease-lubricated bearings and gas bearings Equips those working in tribology and those new to the topic with the fundamental tools of calculation Downloadable programs are available at the companion website With an emphasis on clear explanations, the text offers a thorough understanding of the numerical calculation of lubrication for graduate students on tribology and engineering mechanics courses, with more detailed materials suitable for engineers. This is an accessible reference for senior undergraduate students of tribology and researchers in thin-film fluid mechanics.
The main topic of this book is quantum mechanics, as the title indicates. It specifically targets those topics within quantum mechanics that are needed to understand modern semiconductor theory. It begins with the motivation for quantum mechanics and why classical physics fails when dealing with very small particles and small dimensions. Two key features make this book different from others on quantum mechanics, even those usually intended for engineers: First, after a brief introduction, much of the development is through Fourier theory, a topic that is at the heart of most electrical engineering theory. In this manner, the explanation of the quantum mechanics is rooted in the mathematics familiar to every electrical engineer. Secondly, beginning with the first chapter, simple computer programs in MATLAB are used to illustrate the principles. The programs can easily be copied and used by the reader to do the exercises at the end of the chapters or to just become more familiar with the material. Many of the figures in this book have a title across the top. This title is the name of the MATLAB program that was used to generate that figure. These programs are available to the reader. Appendix D lists all the programs, and they are also downloadable at http://booksupport.wiley.com

Essentials of Computational Electromagnetics provides an in-depth introduction of the three main full-wave numerical methods in computational electromagnetics (CEM); namely, the method of moment (MoM), the finite element method (FEM), and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Numerous monographs can be found addressing one of the above three methods. However, few give a broad general overview of essentials embodied in these methods, or were published too early to include recent advances. Furthermore, many existing monographs only present the final numerical results without specifying practical issues, such as how to convert discretized formulations into computer programs, and the numerical characteristics of the computer programs. In this book, the authors elaborate the above three methods in CEM using practical case studies, explaining their own research experiences along with a review of current literature. A full analysis is provided for typical cases, including characteristics of numerical methods, helping beginners to develop a quick and deep understanding of the essentials of CEM. Outlines practical issues, such as how to convert discretized formulations into computer programs Gives typical computer programs and their numerical characteristics along with line by line explanations of programs Uses practical examples from the authors' own work as well as in the current literature Includes exercise problems to give readers a better understanding of the material Introduces the available commercial software and their limitations This book is intended for graduate-level students in antennas and propagation, microwaves, microelectronics, and electromagnetics. This text can also be used by researchers in electrical and electronic engineering, and software developers interested in writing their own code or understanding the detailed workings of code. Praise for Prioritizing Academic Programs and ServicesFor more than a decade, higher education leaders have turned to Dickeson's practical guide to academic program assessment. These newly expanded approaches are just in time for today's competitive environment." —Suzanne Shipley, president, Shepherd University Dickeson provides a compelling rationale for program prioritization as well as a practical planning structure that promotes alignment between programs, resources, and university mission. Presidents and provosts can use his approach to frame campus discussions around the future of the institution and away from legacy programs whose time has passed." —Kyle R. Carter, provost and senior vice chancellor, Western Carolina University Dickeson's approach ensures that critical decisions regarding academic programs and resource allocation are aligned with strategic goals and institutional mission. As one of the early adopters of the process that he proposes, I am convinced that it is a powerful and practical tool for any college or university committed to remaining focused, resilient, vital, and relevant in a dynamic and increasingly challenging environment." —David Maxwell, president, Drake University Robert C. Dickeson is a higher education consultant, president emeritus of the University of Northern Colorado, and former senior vice president of Lumina Foundation for Education.
This is the first New Directions volume related to young adult learners since 1984. Then, as now, young adults are an important segment of the adult population but have received scant attention in the adult education literature. Increasingly, youths and young adults are enrolling in adult education programs and in doing so are changing the meaning of adulthood. Given the significant demographic, technological, and cultural shifts during the past 30 years, there is an increasing need for practitioners and program planners to reconsider what constitutes “adult” and “adult education.” An understanding of the changing meaning of adulthood is fundamental to developing programs and policies that will address the needs of younger learners, and we believe it is time for an updated discussion among adult educators and scholars in other disciplines. This sourcebook is designed to reignite the discussion related to meeting the educational needs of young adults along with a timely and interdisciplinary discussion that highlights the transitional needs of young adult learners. This is the 143rd volume of the Jossey Bass series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, it explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.
The design of fixings in concrete is in practice almost exclusively performed with programs provided by manufacturers. For the interpretation of the results and to deal with any application case, this book offers explanations about the design procedure.
Bullying is a hot topic at schools across the nation. Chronic involvement in bullying is associated with many intrapersonal, interpersonal, and academic problems, and even sporadic experiences of bullying are harmful. During the last two decades, several prevention and intervention programs have been developed by research teams all over the world. Many of these programs have been adopted in the United States. This volume introduces five evidence-based anti-bullying programs developed in European countries, where much of the early innovations and adaptations have occurred. Based on state-of-the-art knowledge, This volume answers: How can educators detect that bullying is going on in their school? How can educators respond competently in acute bullying situations? How can educators prevent bullying in their schools in the long run? This is the 133rd volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions.

Unlock the secrets of an ancient charting tool The most ancient form of charting, the Japanese candlestick method has become an extremely popular analytical tool among the new generation of traders. However, because of the aura of mysticism surrounding candlesticks and the arcane terminology typically used to describe them, many traders in the West never really learn how to use them properly and exploit their full potential. Profitable Candlestick Trading demystifies candlesticks for today's traders. With the help of numerous real-world examples, Bigalow clearly explains how candlesticks work, how to read them, and how to maximize profits with them. Bigalow shares some of his original candlestick-based trading programs, the same programs which have yielded impressive results for his clients at leading financial firms in the United States and abroad.
